When you move out of that claimed space you come to expect that level of freedom everywhere or question why you can't do things in other places. It becomes normal for you to do things without thinking about them- like holding hands and not worrying about it. There are a lot of variables that play into that though. I also think it depends on where "home" is for you as well, your age, your status in life (meaning are settling down, partying, etc. I know for me, that once MA legalized marriage for all, the entire state felt like it was more open- even though nothing really changed in terms of stuffy/nasty Bostonian attitudes :) Was that me changing? Was that legal recognition forcing change? Was that society changing because of the legal recognition? Who knows?
